Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Our inaugural release of Gamay, the 2021 Pellegrini Gamay K.V. emits aromas of brambles, dusty black cherry, and cinnamon. In the mouth, its broad texture harmonizes with moderate tannins and big round fruit tones of black plum and light cassis.
Vineyard Notes
Nestled into a tiny hillside just outside of Calistoga, Turner Vineyard’s old vine, head pruned Gamay vines are quite the site. Deep, dusty, soft, clay rich soils allow tremendous expression of deep fruits, which in turn also allow us to pick this fruit at very low sugar levels, as seen in this wine’s alcohol levels. The head trained vines allow for varying levels of ripeness, creating a myriad of flavor profiles within the spectrum of Gamay.
Production Notes
Picked in the early hours of the morning, the Turner Vineyard Gamay comes into the winery brisk and cold, where it is hand sorted and 100% destemmed before being transferred into T-bins for fermentation. Once fermentation has begun, submerged cap racks are installed into the T-bins for the remainder of its time in bins, in order to create maximum opportunity for extraction of skin flavors and tannins. All bins are drained and pressed directly to barrel, where the wine stayed until bottling in July.
Food Pairing Notes
Tom kha, pot roast, herb roasted carrots and parsnips, grilled dark meat chicken.
